Eastern Phoebe nests ledges, usually sheltered above by an overhang: under bridges, culverts, or eaves of buildings, on cliffs, rock bluffs or in ravines near water. The nest is an open cup of mud and moss lined with fine grasses, stems, and hair cemented with mud to a wall near a cliff, ceiling or building eave.

We were careful not to disturb the resident in the corner. The bird was still laying her daily egg, and so not sitting on the nest keeping them warm. Photos could be taken. It’s a phoebe’s nest. The goat boys ARE useful! She lined the nest with their soft fur. I think that this is the prettiest nest that I’ve ever seen. The eggs are so tiny.

Minnesota Breeding Bird Distribution* Roberts considered the phoebe a common summer resident throughout the state.Commenting on its close and long-standing association with people, Roberts wrote: Nearly everyone knows this plainly dressed little bird by one name or another, as it comes so familiarly about man’s habitations and mingles its home activities so intimately with those of its host.

Many bird watchers consider the early spring return of the phoebe (and not the American robin) to be the most reliable sign of spring’s arrival. Phoebes are early nesters throughout the breeding range, and nest building often begins almost immediately after a male attracts a mate to a likely site.

Until then, I estimated my chances of seeing a bird’s nest to be nil. I assumed they’d be too well hidden. But, the Black Phoebe’s nest is in a clear line of sight from my backyard! (I also found a Black-chinned Hummingbird nest on the same day, but that’s another story.) The nest is perhaps unusual, because it is resting on a gutter pipe.

There is a Phoebe bird nest in our back alcove. This is the 3rd year they have nested in the same spot. This year there were 4 eggs but only 3 hatched. The babies have grown and left the nest. I noticed the last few nights that one Phoebe returns until the morning. I am wondering if this might be one of the parents or one of the babies.

The genus Sayornis is a small group of medium-sized insect-eating birds, known as phoebes, in the tyrant flycatcher family Tyrannidae. The genus name Sayornis is constructed from the specific part of Charles Lucien Bonaparte’s name for Say’s phoebe, Muscicapa saya, and Ancient Greek ornis, “bird”. Phoebe bird pictures PHOEBE 456. Sayarnis Phoebe. 7 inches A Phoebe is always associated, in my mind, with old bridges and bubbling brooks. Nearly every bridge which is at all adapted for the purpose has its Phoebe home beneath it, to which the same pair of birds will return year after year, sometimes building a new nest, something repairing the old.

The Eastern Phoebe is a good bug catcher, consuming mostly flying insects such as wasps, ants, flies and wild bees. And if that’s not enough, they round out their diet with grasshoppers, ticks, spiders, water bugs and even small fishes from shallow waters. That usually means they like to nest in a wooded area typically near water.

I had seen another phoebe nest just 30 feet from this one and had been watching it for a few days but was unaware of this well concealed nest until she flew. I took the pic below of the nest that is zoomed and cropped to show the fine grasses lining the nest cup which has a lot of moss on it then left to allow her to return to her nest.
