Useless Switch Box: I have a bizarre interest in a few things – switches of all kinds, led’s, and candy tins of all sizes used for project boxes. In order to teach my daughter about how switches work and make a useless gadget that could be like a ‘stress ball’

The idea is simple enough. It is a kind of modern day jack-in-a-box. It just sits there tempting the user to switch it “on”. When you do, the lid opens and a mischievous little leaver emerges and switches itself back “off” again. Each time you activate the switch you get a slightly different pattern of behaviour but it just keeps switching itself off, whatever you do.
One mystical black box with a single toggle switch. Every time you flip the switch, a little finger pops out from the box and turns itself off. No one on this planet has yet figured out a use for this, hence the name ‘Useless Box’.

Simple useless box made with Arduino, one servo motor and CJMCU-2812-24 LED driver board to show the current “mood” of the box.
The useless box is activated with a toggle switch, an arm appears out of the box which then turns the device off. Our variant adds an extra degree of motion, in that once the arm has turned the device off a drive motor then causes the box to “back away” from the operator.

Summary: This game is exactly like a Useless Box but better because it’s a video game about hitting a switch on a Useless Box (still no purpose). The issue with this two switch configuration is that although it works well, it is not what I would call the “spirit” of a useless box: if you first have to power it up, that’s not very fun ! Here is the above-described setup: My idea is to modify this setup to only have one switch, on the top of the useless box.
Here’s your review of the pointless box: it does nothing useful. Pretty lame right? Well, actually it’s a joke in physical form. When you press the button, a small mechanical finger comes out and flips the switch in the other direction. It’s pointless, because the entire function of this rather intricate machine is to switch
That Useless Box I’ve seen people talk about the box Gloria finds in her hotel room to be a metaphor for the third episode. While my initial thoughts on the episode were negative, I do believe she’s drawn to the box because it’s a metaphor for herself.
